In 2000 and 2001, Vitality Center conducted an environmental prevention strategy that targeted underage smoking and drinking in rural Nevada, particularly in Elko County. This strategy included hiring the Gallup Organization to conduct a poll of Elko County residents to assess their attitudes and concerns regarding tobacco use.
In 2002, Vitality Center received funding from the Centers for Disease Control to hire an Elko-based Tobacco Specialist to spearhead a rural Nevada tobacco use prevention program and help bring statewide tobacco programs to rural Nevadans.
In 2003, Vitality Center's Tobacco Specialist helped form an Elko-based community coalition called Citizens Against Nevada Tobacco Use (CAN-TU). This coalition conducted a survey of Elko area restaurants to determine their smoking policies and encourage them to become smoke-free. CAN-TU also prepared a flyer for Elko distribution listing smoke-free eating establishments. The 100% smoke-free Elko restaurants are listed on Washoe County's "Clean Cuisine" web site.
CAN-TU and the Elko PACE Coalition currently are continuing tobacco use cessation efforts, including public participation in youth-oriented “Tar Wars with a Twist” presentations, the American Lung Association’s TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use) program, and the ALA’s other teen program, Not on Tobacco (N-O-T).
Vitality Center counselors can help with tobacco use cessation and interventions along with providing educational information about tobacco use and tobacco products.
